Car Lock Rekey in Los Angeles

Just purchased secondhand, or not sure who else has a key? A rekey restores your locks to a new key without changing the current locks at all.

One of the most affordable ways to secure your vehicle is through a rekeying. Instead of replacing the actual hardware, the locksmith will reset your current locks to a new key. Once the job is done, your old keys become completely unusable.

What it means rekeying?

The lock in question is composed of small pins or wafers configured to match the exact key. The process of rekeying rearranges the internal configuration of your locks to match a new configuration that only a new key will operate. The hardware remains exactly the same, but its response to the key will be altered.

When to consider rekeying

  • Your purchase of the vehicle used means you can never be quite sure how many old keys remain in circulation.
  • An old key went missing or got stolen, and you would like it to be 100% impossible to replicate that key.
  • There was a common system before like having to sell your car, share your accommodation with a room mate, or use an employee who could access your company car.
  • You now find yourself in possession of two keys due to having to deal with lock mismatches.

Replace lock or rekey?

Whereas replacement consists of changing the whole lock itself with an entirely new piece, rekeying leaves you with the same hardware and merely reconfigures it to respond only to the new key. If the locks are otherwise fine, rekeying will save you time and money.

Used car? Here is what you should do first

When buying a used vehicle, you are most likely going to receive a few keys but have no clue if anyone else ever held onto an extra key and by rekeying your locks, you eliminate this potential threat, ensuring that you are the sole possessor of operational keys for your car.

Our rekey process

1. Inspection of door locks, ignition, and any locks in a trunk or a glove compartment.

2. Rearrangement of the inner lock mechanisms in order to make them compatible with a new key pattern.

3. Cutting the key to correspond with the new lock configuration.

4. Testing the newly created keys and ensuring old ones will not fit into rekeyed locks.
